Chema Guide: Community Crowdfunding, Traditions & How Chema Works

Learn about the Zimbabwean tradition of Chema, how fundraising works on chema.co.zw, payment and withdrawal options, fees, and what organisers and donors should check.

In Shona funeral contexts, chema can refer to contributions of sympathy and practical support for a bereaved household. The form and expectations of that support differ across families and communities; no single custom represents every Zimbabwean family.

Families and supporters may now be spread across Zimbabwe and the diaspora. A campaign page can give supporters one place to read the organiser's story, contribute, and follow the amount raised.

Chema (chema.co.zw) is Muzukuru's community fundraising platform. It provides campaign pages and payment infrastructure; organisers remain responsible for truthful campaign information and using funds for the stated purpose.

Part 1

How Chema Works: From Campaign to Payout

Campaign setup, donations, account checks, and withdrawal review

The Chema flow is straightforward, but donations and withdrawals remain subject to payment-provider processing and account checks:

  • 1. Create and publish a fundraiser: Register for an account, choose a category, provide an honest description and goal, and publish. Chema's terms require organisers to have the right to fundraise for the named beneficiary and use funds for the stated purpose.
  • 2. Share and receive donations: Share the campaign link with your community. Donors do not need an account, and checkout offers payment methods available for the selected currency and location. Donations are generally non-refundable under Chema's terms, except where a fundraiser is found fraudulent.
  • 3. Request a withdrawal: Add a supported payout method and complete account verification. Submit a withdrawal request from the fundraiser dashboard; it is reviewed before payment. Chema's terms say approved withdrawals are processed within 24 hours, though providers or financial institutions may cause delays.

Check the fees before publishing

Starting a campaign is free, but payment-processing fees and any applicable platform fee are deducted before funds reach the fundraiser. Check Chema's current Pricing & Fees page and the fee breakdown shown during setup because rates and payment methods can change.

The 4 Core Use Cases on Chema

Whatever your need, your community is ready to stand with you

While Chema is deeply rooted in bereavement, the platform supports four essential life pillars where community solidarity is needed most:

  • Funerals: Honour a loved one with dignity. Raise funds to help cover mortuary, transport, burial, and gathering expenses.
  • Medical Bills: Raise support for surgery, treatment, and hospital stays.
  • School Fees: Raise funds for tuition, uniforms, exam fees, and books.
  • Community Projects: Bring people together to support boreholes, school blocks, clinics, or village initiatives.

Rules and Checks for Organisers and Donors

Understand what the platform does and what remains your responsibility

Chema provides campaign pages and payment infrastructure. Its Terms of Service place important responsibilities on campaign organisers and donors:

  • Organisers must provide accurate, non-misleading information, have the right to raise funds for the named beneficiary, and use the money for the stated purpose. Chema may remove campaigns that breach its rules.
  • Chema does not guarantee that a campaign will reach its target and says it is not responsible for how organisers use funds. The public page shows campaign totals and recent donations, but that does not independently verify spending. Donors should review the campaign, organiser, beneficiary, and stated use before contributing, and ask the organiser for updates or receipts if they need more detail.
  • Donations are generally non-refundable unless Chema finds the fundraiser fraudulent. Contact Chema support promptly if you suspect fraud or a payment problem.
  • Recent donations show the donor name and contribution amount on the campaign page. Donors can choose the anonymous option at checkout; their name is then hidden from the fundraiser donor list, while the contribution still counts toward the goal. Published campaigns are public, so organisers should only share personal details they have permission to publish.
  • Chema's FAQ says a campaign can continue accepting donations after reaching its goal, provided it remains active. Reaching the target does not itself trigger a payout.

Etiquette for Contributors and Campaign Organizers

Offering words of comfort and stewarding community goodwill

Chema also lets people show care and encouragement across distance:

  • Leave Messages of Comfort: Donors can include a message of sympathy or encouragement for the family.
  • Share the Campaign Link: Organisers can share the campaign page through WhatsApp, Facebook, or email. A published page is not proof that all campaign claims have been independently verified.
  • Post Regular Updates: Keep donors informed about memorial dates, recovery progress, or project milestones to honor the community's trust.
